Physician Receives HeartCaring® 2014 HeartChamp Award

DeLand, FL, May 8 2014 – Dr. Janak H. Bhavsar, interventional cardiologist at Florida Hospital DeLand, is the inaugural recipient of the national HeartCaring® 2014 HeartChamp Award.

The HeartChamp Award is awarded to one physician annually who enthusiastically and passionately aims to reduce heart disease prevalence by donating his time and knowledge to review health screening results, heart-health lectures and community education programs.

Bhavsar, Florida Hospital DeLand’s medical director for endovascular services, was officially recognized at the 10th annual HeartCaring Conference Awards on May 1 in St. Louis, Mo.

“I am so honored to receive the first annual HeartChamp Award,” said Bhavsar. “It is an honor to serve a community that embraces my passion for improving and saving lives in DeLand.”

Florida Hospital DeLand’s efforts in supporting the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women Day on February 7 was a contributing factor in this award. Approximately 100 people joined the hospital for a free heart-healthy breakfast and health fair, as well as tours of the cardiac areas and cardiac catheterization labs. As part of the celebration, nearly 70 participants received free heart disease screenings, including blood work, to learn their risk of cardiac disease.

Additionally, Bhavsar presented a continuing medical education (CME) seminar, entitled “Cardiovascular Disease in Women & HeartCaring Program Update”, which was attended by more than 65 physicians and health care clinicians.

“We are so proud of Dr. Bhavsar and grateful for his dedication to saving lives and educating our community on heart health.  He is a true HeartChamp and very deserving of this award,” said Tim Cook, Florida Hospital DeLand CEO.

As an interventional cardiologist, Dr. Bhavsar specializes in coronary catheterization, and performs both cardiac and peripheral interventions. He also performs diagnostic studies, such as tranthoracic and transesophageal echocardiograms, nuclear medicine studies and vascular interpretations. Bhavsar is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology echocardiography. He is also board certified in nuclear cardiology and vascular interpretation. Dr. Bhavsar is in private practice with Daytona Heart Group – West Volusia.

The Florida Hospitals in Volusia and Flagler counties are the only facilities in the area to be designated HeartCaring hospitals. The HeartCaring initiative is a national, clinically-based program focused on inspiring women and men to take action for their cardiovascular health.

Through training, screening and educational events, Florida Hospital Volusia/Flagler and its more than 50 HeartCaring-designated physicians have created an environment that promotes earlier detection, more rapid treatment, and appropriate lifestyle choices. Receiving this esteemed designation is a testimony to the comprehensive nature of Florida Hospital’s cardiovascular resources.
