Local High School Students Swim for Awareness and Funds for Breast Cancer
DELAND – On Tuesday, October 16, two area high schools’ regularly scheduled swim meet became extra special. Approximately 75 swimmers from University High School and DeLand High School put on pink swimsuits to honor breast cancer survivors and raise funds for the Florida Hospital DeLand Cancer Resource Center, which provides local women with prosthetic devices following breast surgery, as well as wigs and other cancer resources.

Even though the swimmers from DeLand High School won the meet, the real winners are local women who depend on those free services at the Florida Hospital DeLand Cancer Resource Center. The swimmers, ranging between ninth and 12th grade, raised $1,000 by selling breast cancer awareness t-shirts and snacks, such as pink cupcakes, at the Four Townes Family YMCA, 280 Wolf Pack Run in Deltona.

“Many of the swimmers have been directly affected by breast cancer, through family members and friends, and they wanted to help,” said Leanna Parrish, University High School Swim Coach.

Parrish started this event to help teach the students how to get involved.

“These athletes and their parents are a great bunch of caring individuals who want to give back to their community and we hope that this event will grow in years to come,” she said.

Florida Hospital’s Pink Army was also at the event, helping to spread the awareness about battling the second most common form of cancer found in women.

Launched in the fall of 2010, Florida Hospital’s Pink Army campaign is aimed at enlisting individuals to help create greater awareness about the life-saving benefits of annual mammograms and early detection, all while having fun with friends and family.
