DELAND, Fla., November 4, 2013 – On October 17, nearly 200 community members joined Florida Hospital DeLand for the 16th annual Inspiring Beauty Breast Cancer Fashion Show at the Historic Athens Theatre.
The event raised more than $10,000 and will help fund screening mammograms and diagnostic studies to local women in need at the Florida Hospital DeLand Women’s Center at Victoria Medical Park.
Sporting fashions from Belk at the Pavilion at Port Orange and Stetson Flower and Wedding Boutique in DeLand, all six of the models were breast cancer survivors and ranged in ages from the 20’s to the 70’s.
One of the models, Julie Craig, was first diagnosed with breast cancer at 13 years old. After her first surgery as a teenager, doctors told her that the cancer should not come back for at least 30 years, but unfortunately, just 10 years later, Craig had a recurrence. She eventually decided to have a bilateral mastectomy to remove both of her breasts.
Now, at 23 years old, Craig lives in Deltona and is mother to 3-year-old Riley.
“Having a daughter helped me realize that life is so precious and how being a survivor is so important,” Craig said. “I encourage all young women to get checked regularly. My journey would have been much worse, if it was not detected so soon.”
“Walking in the fashion show was a great experience, as I'm far from the girly girl type,” she added. “The feeling of having people watch and know that there's hope was amazing!”
